wierd spluttery stalling when the clutch is down

When i'm slowing down and going into second or first gear I'm stalling in a very spluttery way evwn though i have my foot hard down on the clutch.
Also, I'm losing power now and again when i've got my foot flat on the accelerator. Perhaps the two are connected? Any ideas? Help gratefully received...
