Hi all,I have an '85 DG watercooled Caravelle based Devon dayvan with a now toasted 5 speed gearbox.
Question is will any year 4 or 5 speed box go in or does it need to be a box from the same year?
thanks everyone

A 4-speed box from a T25 will fit OK, just check the code (i.e. diff ratio is OK)

the code on the gearbox it's stamped into the bottom below the reverse switch housing it will tell what it is and when it was built. see the wiki my website the brickyard syncrospares site etc.... for details
you will also need the mounts for the four speed box as it's shorter than the five and ideally the gearstick and front linkage too as that's five/four speed dependent and the rear linkage and mounts are diesel/petrol specific.
It will be much the easiest to do a like for like swap and much the best to get your box fixed or get one the same built for it, unless you plan on an engine swap in which case take that into account

hi folks
while aiden is around it might be good to know what the various gearbox
4/5 speed diff code sets, letters/numbers are and what vehicles/engines these relate to
ive had a quick look on wiki and cant find this info, maybe in the haynes books?!

Cheers All,I have the chance of another box locally but have no idea whether it's a 4 or 5 speed so this info will save a load of time.
Will the 4 speed go in without the other 4 speed gubbinz as I will only have the gearbox and no other ancillaries.

Good..
Have now put links to the transaxle code tables in the Syncro website into the Wiki here:

you need a four speed gearbox mount to fit a four speed box into a van or you can use the five speed mount and bodge it with some very long bolts and spacer sleeves - I've seen that done before

Hi All,been away for a couple of weeks in the bus with my new(to me!) 4 speed diesel gearbox grafted on,all has gone well,no trouble.I think the garage ended up having to make a mounting bracket up as the box was sitting higher than the 5 speed petrol one so it needed lowering down to get it in line, after that all it needed was a bit of adjustment for the gears to go in on the "H" for gear selection.
I've done about 1200 miles on it this last couple of weeks and had no problems,MPG is not a great deal different,if anything the box is nicer than the 5 speed as the gears are longer!,cheers All for your input, regards,DeeGee
