I think i read a few years ago that the vege and remtec engines did not have hydraulic tappets is that right?

all the T25 flat fours have hydrolic lifters AFAIK water and air

I know that they all came from the factory with hydraulic tappets but i think i read that when vege and remtec recon them they put solid lifters in, i also can't remember if it was waterboxers or type 4's.

I too have heard that some recon engines have plain tappets in.

If I rebuild any motors I put solid lifters in, much less power loss and a better valve opening but main stream you will find Volkspares engines irrespective of water or air have solid lifters in them.

Why is there less power loss with solid lifters than hydraulic lifters.
Hydraulic lifters give you the correct valve lift and timing all the time.
Solid lifters only do this once warm and only if they are all adjusted correctly.
Or am I missing something.
The Porsche 964 had solid lifters the 993 had hydraulic no power loss there. I know its overhead cam.
I thought solid lifters were only used for very high reving engines.

It is just an rpm thing and with the max speed of the waterboxers being low there is no advantage to solid lifters. Like you say hydraulic lifters are always correct and much less chance of valve problems which is why i am asking, i won't have any engine with solid lifters.

I now have doubts about what i might get from vege or remtec.

Price up a VW engine before you order... if you have a friendly vw dealer.. might be worth finding a va van dealer to go to though..

We deal with them alot through work, they struggle when we need an oil filter for a golf even if we give them the part no, i would'nt like to think how stressed i might end up after ordering an engine for something that the spotty geaks have never heard.

I would prefer geniune and don't mind if its a bit more but don't want the hassle.

Vege and VW are Hydraulic, lesser recons IMHO are solid.
I've driven both with solid and hydraulic and can see/feel no benefit of solid lifters plus you have to dick about setting them all the time, and they rattle, and I hate them.
VW recons are around the same price as Vege.
VW have a healthy supply of engines at Milton Kynes and if ordered in the morning can be sat on the garage floor by tomorrow afternoon.
VW ones come with a green card, this needs to be taken to the dealers along with the freshly fitted engine, and checked over for yor warranty card stamping. Only then will you get your full 2 years unlimited mileage european guarantee.

Thats fine we each have our own opinions, I like the solid lifters, gives me more control over valve lift and I can rev the engine a lot higher particularly in those requiring a bit more power, just my way, it works and my Customers are happy even the race competitor ones.

Right thats good to know vege are hydrauilic. The VW warranty issue is another issue, my van runs only on LPG they will void the warranty if they see it. We have problems with our dealer with warranty things on small items even though they know of quality issues.
