does anybody use there van without using a leisure battery or am i being plain stupid

You can do it but the use of your main battery for auxiliary items will have to be very restricted so as not to flatten it... And if you flatten it you won't be going anywhere!
That's pretty much why a second battery is installed... Use it 'till it's dead and still be able to start your engine!

I'm not using my leisure battery, but only because I can't wire it up properly!

I'm not using one because I don't have one, but by the end of the week I will have and then I plan two weeks of leisure..

cheers for the replies but i was wondering that if i was on a site with hook up and ran a battery charger to my battery while using 12v lights would that not work

Yes, it would. Just make sure the charger outputs enough power to run the lights. Some small chargers may struggle to keep up with power usage depending on what lights and how many you are using.
It will work though.

Wiring up a leisure battery is easy peasy you just need a battery some 20amp cable an inline fuse a relay some electrical conectors and a scotchlock all the bits you need can be bought from ya local halfrauds for bout £20 excluding the battery and it takes about 2 hours to install it all
