Oil in Air filter box

Just getting all the little jobs sorted before we head back to Europe for our holidays, on Wednesday.

After reading Tony's thread about the Air filter I decided to have a gander at mine. I found it very dirty and Oil in the pipe from the Carb and resting at the bottom of the filter box, in a little puddle.

Should I be worried?

I'm just away to get another filter and I'll give the pipes a good clean just hope there is nothing sinister happening.

I have a 1.9DG 5speed 1986 watercooled.

Thanks

Friend of mine had this problem and it was because he had overfilled the oil. He thought he'd be on the safe side by going above the mark!

I get it sometimes and seems to be normal from what I have read about this, I can only assume that under some conditions/overun, etc the crankcase pressure/ fumes are pushed backwards along the inlet duct and not sucked into the induction system.

quite normal to find a bit in there... engine is a little tired and so "breaths" a bit of oil vapour, this tends to condense on the cool intake pipes and cool air coming in and drops out.... if its swiming in it, then the engine is very tired, but you'd be putting in oil to match so would be aware of it...

Never over fill the wbx.. they dont like it... my #velle will use the oil from full to half then not use any (ok, hardly any) so as long as its above 1/4 and near half I dont add any...

Some oil residue is blown out of the breather into the air filter box and is normal.......However, this is a small amount and rarely contaminates the air filter. If the amount is sufficient to wet a large part of the filter something is wrong.

Thanks for the help guys.

It makes sense now, I had a garage give it a winter service and he changed the oil filter and oil as part of it. I then gave it to a friend to check over for the MOT and he spotted a smal oil leak. He found the previous guy and used the wrong oil and over-filled it. SO that could be why there is a small amount in the filterbox. I gave it a clean and popped the new filter in ( C1996 code) and will take it for a spin tommorrow.

Thanks again
