Spitting oil

Thought my 2l air cooled was running lumpy and put hand over exhaust to feel if it was regular - seems off and got oil spitting over my palm.

Presume this means either the valve replaced in Germany has gone awry or another ones gone or piston rings?

Yet to diagnose which cylinder but she's driven ok into Italian alps by way of France and Tuscany so - keep going and hope then new engine on return , or tow home?

A compression check may give you an indication of which pot is at fault,,,,,,,,But a CLT (Cylinder Leakage Test) will be more specific as to the cause of the oil in the exhaust..

PS, if you have been revving the stones off it during your trip it may broken a ring or two.... :o

sure it isnt just sooty crud??? "neat" oil/residues out the exhaust would mean pretty bad and blue smoke really.... blue smoke???

Thanks for the thoughts there - there's been a little smoke from the exhaust but mostly white not black/blue...

Pulled and replaced all the plugs and all had carbon/sooty blackening but not oily deposits (unlike pre-valve change where no 1 cylinder had oily blackness abounding and no compression).

All 4 cylinders are firing (phew :D), the right carb has quite oily deposits around it and the fat engine breather hoses to the air filter also oily (should they be connected on a gas-converted engine???). Changed oil filter too - some dirt but couldn't tell if oily deposits were from my fingers or the engine TBH.

Revving it - well lots of uphill in 2nd into the alps...

Think she'll get us home and we'll avoid further alpine passes and keep oil topped up though don't have the kit with for a compression test - just hope there'll be no further legs on flatbed trucks!

Cheers for thoughts... any further ones welcome given this info.
