clunking noise n/s front

the van has a n/s front clunking noise when driving in a straight line

this reduces when the van corners either way, to no noise at all

that corner is also quite squeaky on the suspension

anything related here folks? or am i looking at new CV joints? ( not checked for any play yet)

Sounds like the dreaded wishbone bushes to me. Unless you have 4wd there are no CV joints at the front.

so would the wishbone bushes cause a clunking noise as well?

The clunking could be any of the suspension components ... from the ARB bushes or a broken drop link to a worn ball joint, track rod end, wheel bearing, traffic cone stuck underneath (don't laugh I've seen one wedged under an Escort's wing ... the driver a female :zip ... said it 'wouldn't turn' right so she did a left-hand circuit home and begged me and a chum to sort it before her husband got home  ) ... anything ... time to get down and dirty I fear :|

Sounds silly but I tried everything else once, then discovered wheel nuts were loose after recent disc change

Just a word of warning ... when I changed our n/s/f bearing there was very little movement in the bearing by the usual test, but the inner bearing was knocking quite badly under load.

Ian.
