stereo and amp fitting

I've got to re-wire my stereo and amp as it was disconnected from the old battery. What thickness wire is best to use? Does the wire have to be the same thickness for the stereo as for the amp?

A typical stereo uses a 7.5amp fuse so is a relatively low power consumer (1mm thinwall 16.5amp should easily cover it) the amp on the other hand is a much more power hungry beast. The wiring for this depends on the power of the amp but will likely need to be much heavier 2.5mm or bigger to cope with the current draw. Just look at the spec sheet for the amp, it should suggest a fuse rating.... go for cable rated at least 30% higher than the suggested fuse rating.

As said before the guage of wiring required for the amp demands entirely on how powerfull it is and how much current it draws. As a rough guide for the amp wiring use the following:-
2AWG - 95 Amps
4AWG - 70 Amps
6AWG - 55 Amps
8AWG - 40 Amps
10AWG - 25, 30 Amps
12AWG - 25 Amps
14AWG - 18 Amps
16AWG - 13 Amps
18AWG - 10 Amps

there is a formula to work out amps drain. i think its- power Rms in watts divided by voltage
ie, 120w dived by 12v = 10a ........ i think its that way round(i forgot)
