Guys n gals,

have just picked up a set of clocks on ebay which include the rev counter and the digi clock in the centre. Can I simply plug my existing connector into the back of the new set or is there other mods I need to do.

The PCB on the new set of clocks is badly corroded so I am trying pick up a new one before connecting it up (come on billy739 tell me you have still got it for sale please!), otherwise they are in great nick and look so much better than my tatty old one, the PCB connector looks to be the same and both have 14 connectors.

so anyway, am I creating a major headache or is it pretty easy (please say the latter guys...)

here's the old set... nice holes under the centre warning lights (heaven knows what they were for????

and the new set...

oh and ps... anyone know what the round hole is for in the top left corner of the dash in the pic below?

the hole in the dash is for the factory fitted trailer repaeter warning lamp, and mostly has a blanking cap in it, iirc

as for the swapping, provided you have a late van,of the correct fuel type for the clocks its plug and play.

thanks Steve, brilliant diagram. My van is 1985 and petrol which is correct for these clocks - I dont know wether it fits into the 'late' bracket or not though?

'85 can be a bit of funny ole year, depends , '84 and '85 are the changeover years, depending on time of registration and how long it stood before sale.

i would think you are correct for the clocks tho...
just incase, early wiring is

Does your van have the 'buzzer of doom' PCB in the speedo housing. Like Mocki says it was crossover time around then and the new oil pressure warning system was also introduced.

thanks AngeloEvs, I've checked the clock on the old unit and unless I am missing something obvious no - it doesnt look as though it has any buzzer fitted.

If that means I have an earlier model how does that effect fitting this version of dash clocks - don't tell me - a lot of work...

which fuse box does you're van have ?
is it the older 'bullet' fuses or the later 'blade' fuses

i recon you will have BoD on a '85, if you have the later plug.
(As onion says fusebox is a fair indecation, but not concrete, depends what bits mr VW was using up at the time.

the BoD looks like this

You will be ok, just have to run a wire from the coil (for the rev counter) if your van doesn't have the dops, couple of other minor mods but nothing to worry about.........

Hi dont want to hijack but im thinking of putting a rev counter in my 1.9 DG Caravelle 1989. How do you tell which ones are for diesel or petrol vans? Or will either work?
Cheers.
