I've just gone mad and ordered a new set of Monroe shock and a complete Powerflex bush set.

I have three choices now:
a) fit them myself in the parkhaus with limited tools and only axle stands
b) take a day off work and rent a bay in the DIY workshop with all the tools and do it myself
c) take it to my local workshop and get them to do it.

Question - how long (approx.) would a competent workshop need (he is old school specialising in VWs, Audi, et al.)?

I've just had a butchers underneath and I think option a is unlikely.

Now that I have done mine I reckon I could do another vehicle in a day,no probs. especially with ramp and air tools etc. An experienced VW mechanic prob a bit faster.

Just make sure that you have the lower arm chassis bolt available, as only one side unbolted. the other needed cutting off with an angle grinder. This only took a few minutes.

4 hrs labour a side?? no tea breaks.

Big thanks for that tip about the chassis bolt (I'll have to track down the part number).
After looking at your pic's, it's going to the workshop.
That sort of work is out of my league.

Now that makes a difference!
New shocks and full powerflex kit installed by a local workshop for a reasonable fee.
I have a new van!!

It almost handles now.

More powerflex items on the way I'm told.

I cant believe how much of the cross wind instability was due to sloppy lower arm bushes, mine is so much more controlled and relaxing to drive at speed.
