carpet interior lining - how can I stop the dust??

New member, loads of questions due from me I'm sure.... Can anyone help?
The carpet lining in the van has begun to degrade due to sun and we get loads of fibres falling whenever anything is moved around. Not ready to tackle replacing interior yet, but has anyone come across this and found any way of stopping all the carpet fibres from dropping? I've hoovered thoroughly which has improved it a bit. My mother (ever imaginative) suggested hairspray (!) - does anyone have any more realistic suggestions?
Cheers

You could try misting them with VERY watered down PVA glue from a cheap 1ltr squeezy spray? That should stabilise them. Similar effect to the hairspray but a bit more permanent. Just cover anything you son't want it on or use a damp cloth after to wipe down. Once dry it should bond the fibres together and stop the dust. Teaspoons worth to a litre should be more than enough strength.

exactly the same thing happening in our van, i was surprised by how cheap you can get the interior re-lined for, we have been quoted £500 from a place in Cheshire (i think!) we are thinking of getting ours done. The same thing has happened, the heat has hit it and the contact adhesive doesn't seem to hold up to heat, i now realise why high temp spray is used! I think the debris falling is a combination of dried glue and worn carpet. I think u'd only shortly inhibit the dust. Maybe worth looking into a re-lining?

Thanks for the feedback guys - good to hear it's not just our van! Will definitely investigate relining, perhaps once we get the carb working properly and deal with the rust!!!

Had rust and carb issues too! You'll get there, i'd not recommend changing your carb with the one from justkampers, we changed out solex and after numerous mechanics looking at it its still not running right. I would say get whatever you have refurbed by steve at gasure, wish i would have! Much much cheaper!

As for rust, vactan and rustoleum!

I've recently ripped all the lining carpet out of our hi top, having scrubbed with a stiff brush and hoovered it 3 times with no success. it's just bare fibre glass up there now, but rather that than the kids - and us - breathing in those tiny fibres!

Still considering options for relining on a non existent budget :?

I thought it was the glue drying and becoming brittle and crusty? Maybe i'm wrong but it never really seemed like it was the fibres of the carpet to me. Open to discussion!

Whilst I appreciate your trepidation as regards a re-trim as a solution perhaps this may provide a small nudge in that general direction

The stuff coming from ours was definately tiny fibres.

Probably going to paint the inside for now, as the bare fibreglass is letting in loads of light and we have a festie in a couple of weeks!

Thanks all! Sure if I had a go doing it myself though, the before and after pics wouldn't be quite as impressive!
