All,
What oil do you use? i am interested in this, as i am wanting to change mine as the hydraulic tappets are a bit noisey... apparently they are all new aswell, so i thought i'd change the oil, but unsure as to what is recommended and what to use. GSF recommend Morris Supreme 30...?
I have a 1981 2.0ltr Aircooled, of which has been rebuilt not too long ago.
Cheers

I use15W/40, as recommended by my local dubdoctor, Steve at Gasure. He says Quantum or Fuchs, but for convenience I use Homebase. But now all leaks are stopped thanks to a full set of uprated seals, I'll probably get the Quantum. Was getting through 5l in double quick time! Hope this helps.

VW. Try your local parts department. Haven't been in recently, so not sure how much it is.

I use single grade 30 (Morris) in the summer, and a 10/40 or 15/40 in the winter as it has a lower operating temperature. If you have a bentleys manual there is a useful chart that provides suggested oil to use in each temperature range. Don't know why people are saying stay away from morris oil, as loads of dubheads i have spoken too say morris oil is they only oil to use.

30 grade was the oil for aircooleds.
was.........
oil technology has moved on since then.
a good 15-40 mineral (has to be mineral tho) will be better for your Aircooled engine
as for your tappy tappets does the sound go after a good drive??
if so all is well dont worry.

i haven't driven it for a while, but last time i did, the tappets quietened down after 5miles or so.., i'll be bringing the bus home tomorrow, and its been standing for 4 months, while we did the interior resto, so we'll see how long it takes for the tappets to go quiet...
so do you think good old Castrol GTX high miles @ 15W 40 or the Mobil M 15W 40 would be ok?

Used Castrol GTX on all my engines for more years then I can count. Never had a problem and have driven 100k on some of them (Aircooled) Now using Castrol GTX high mileage because it's 15W40 and easy to find.

If you are close to Brickwerks, buy from Simon... cheaper and he knows his stuff.
