Just got back from great week at Glastonbury, but poor old Moby let us down 3 miles from the festival site.
We had no problems all the way there, crusing at 65 - 70 on the motorway, but when we hit the traffic near Shepton mallet we started having problems. When we were going up hill at a crawl the engine started loosing reves and would stall. I suspected it was fuel stavation but as i am a newbie and have not played arround with engines or carbs for over 25 years i am not sure what the problem is. We got Moby runing again with help from an RAC lady, she commented that the fuel pump could be struggling . We set of again, in traffic at a snails pace ( 1/2 mile per hour) and on the very next hill we had the same problem. We gave up driving and got towed into the festival as we could not risk breaking down again. We got moby running when we arrived and setteled down to enjoy the festival.
We decided on the return journey to set off early, to avoid traffic jams and slow driving up hills. Moby performed perfect all the way to Birmingham untill we got to M5 - M6 junction and hit slow traffic on a slight uphill, and Moby Died again and this time it was terminal.
We got the RAC out again (1 1/2 hours wait on hard shoulder within 1/4 mile from RAC HQ !!!!) This time i was told it was due to too much petrol going into one carb !!!. We ended getting home on the back of a Truck.
I have striped down the carbs, cleaned and put back together but still not working. I can start moby and she will tick over but as soon as you give her any throttle she will not rev.
Can anyone reccomend a remedy or am i looking at a new set of carbs.

Moby is an 81 T25 2 litre air cooled with twin solex carbs

they make a huge diff to the a/c motor

just one thing tho is all your engine bay seal and tinware present??

it sounds to me like your problem is caused by overheating.........

With respect 70mph in an Aircooled isn't cruising it's thrashing it, if it really was cruising then there's nothing wrong with the carbs and more wrong with the speedo

Sounds just like my old Aircooled....it was fine all the time the traffic was moving....then when it was stop start she would start to lose revs, and eventually she would die and not restart. Half hour later, and away she would go again.

I had it compression tested, and found that basically only one cylinder had anywhere near the compression it should have had. the carbs couldn't be tuned properly as there were air leaks all over the place. For me, unfortunately, it was new engine time....hopefully not for you. Get it compression tested, and go from there!

Good luck - I know that sinking feeling when you see stationary traffic and just know that you aren't going to get through it....

70 in an air cooled!

Wrong fuel, I think you must have put Nox in it

is 70 really that bad in an Aircooled? I regularly do 70 in mine...try to keep it to 65 but it keeps creeping up! having said that my long motorway trips are only about once a month or more. On the flat it feels like it wants to do more and has been up to almost 85 once. I try to keep it lower to preserve fuel economy and general wear and tear because we all know these engines are getting on but is 70 really pushing it too much?

I'd be intersted in hearing a few more opinions. maybe i should get the max speed

Some really well set up and healthy ones do go very well.. a former member had a nice bus and he reckond it would hit a ton... it certainly went well.. but as 25 years of bodging owners and unsympathetic garages will have taken its toll on most... it wants to be well serviced properly set up and ALL the tinware and seals need to be ther eand in good nick....

my old un (hi top with dual twin choke dells) wpould cruise at 70 - 75 all day long

but then it was properly set up all tinware and seals present and fuelled to perfection!!

Well I had a bay window with the same engine and I could easily reach the end of the speedo. Around 90 mph

But in a wedge - heavy, square, wide

70 seems a little too quick

i think mines set up pretty well but it does burn a bit of oil. carbs were rebuilt recently though. I shall try to take it a little easier in future!

Thanks for some of the positive feed back, i have decided to get the carbs fully serviced by Steff at manchester Air cooled, i will post a reply when the final cause and remedy are known.

Just out of interest do the stewards at Glastonbury let you in being towed? I thought they would need to know you could get away again.

No problem being towed in to Glastonbury, they even have AA and RAC on site

We've been towed into Glastonbury, and the off again a week later! Only problem was blagging tow home, and driver actually getting on site, as traffic is reversed on Monday.

Ive got a 1.9 watercooled...

I tend to keep the speed at 60 Max, just for fuel economy...it seems to make such a difference, Nellie is more than capable of doing 70 plus but whats the point of caning it...
