Shaving a tyre to match a set

Has anyone got experience of shaving a new tyre down to match a part worn set.
I am in the situation of having 4 equally worn BFG MT with 11mm of treat and a brand new spare with 14mm.
Is 3 mm of tread difference going to be too much for the VC, particuarly for the 250mile motorway cruise to SP-09.
Has anyone had a new tyre shaved before.
Other option is to get another new tyre, run the two new tyres on the rear with the propshaft out on the road stretch, and swap the four old tyres around on the front untill the new ones match the old. But this means a new (expensive) tyre and having to drop the prop shaft in and out more than id like.
Any suggestions?
Alastair
