Strange Engine Noise

I've just started up my relative new (to me) 1983 Volkswagen Autohomes Kamper after being away, and leaving it standing, for a few weeks and there's a new noise. It's a distinct 'tick-tick-tick-tick' (like the sound of someone running a stick along railings) over the engine sound coming from the back. I guess that without depressing the accelerator the rate is about 3-4 ticks per second.

I recently removed all the seats to re-cover so the internal acoustics are slightly altered, but this new noise seems overtly different from noises I have experienced in her before.

Any suggestions as to what it could be - Changing gear doesn't affect it and but applying gas increases the tick with the rev of the engine.

Cheers in advance for any help.

Thanks for that. Once she has seats again I'll give her a canter.

All the best,

Jeremy

Make sure your dipstick shows good thick fresh oil right up to the full mark ( i fill mine to 2 mm above the top line  ) and the noise will maybe go away , mine generally does .
