Well the story goes along the lines that i wanted to remove and replace the rear springs on my T25 panal van, i removed the springs and the lower mounting fell off on both sides. and made a start!!

well as i removed the back wheel i noticed a cruddy bit on the arm so like a moron i poked it with a screw driver!! should have known better!! now i am left with this:





so my question is can i weld up the holes?? The rest of the arm survived the screwdriver poking!
will it pass its test??
If i cant weld it, how do i change the arm? it looks like a mahoosive job!!!!!

i think you can weld this, i know it might have seemed upsetting when you poked it and it went through but better to do that and mend it than it staying that way.

Wont pass the mot as the rust is too close to suspension mounting nothing to stop you welding it but the heat might damage the bush

second hand trailing arm? which side is it?

Not supposed to weld stressed suspension arm/parts for MOT. Sorry I would have to fail it Only doing what the regs say....Cheap enough to replace second hand...

no problem welding it for the mot!


only thing i would be worried about is the overal thickness of the remaining metal

in an ideal world they are easy to replace , just a few bolts.

in realistic terms all the bolts seize , brakes found to be faulty ect ect

get some new(2nd hand)arms( check the other side)

buy new bushes/bolts

you may end up replacing brake components found to be faulty whilst stripping.


i have quite a few pairs of good arms going to BVF next week to sell if your interested

any idea how big a job it is to swap it?

any one got a replacement arm please?

It says in the testers manual....Welding repairs to highly stressed components such as suspension arms, rods, levers etc are normally not acceptable....Make of that what you will, but I would still be failing it. Another grey one
Welding it in situ would with the heat build up burn the rubber I guess anyway.
Best place for that arm is the scrap bin and get a S/H one of Billy739

yea, you can patch it up and paint them and *maybe* pass the mot but would you feel like trusting it? best get a new one.

Get second hand ones, spend a little money getting them blasted and coated. The will look reet good. Getting them off can be a right so and so. Alledgedly.

i think i am going to inspect my wagon for rust! :S

Get them changed not welded....safety first

If its that rotten there then the rest of the arm isnt going to be all that good either.... replace it with some good second hand ones... have em blasted and powdercoated...

This will be a hassle of a job as the bolts will be rusted solid.. the rubbers wont be great and it wont come apart easily... then as said... if any of the braking components are tired and poor condition,. you really want to replace them too (you might have to if they done come apart) if one side is that bad I would bet on the other being similar unless its been changed... hand in pocket I am afraid...
