Gearbox mod

Hi is there anyone that can help, i am off to fit a 1800 golf gti engine to my t25 and need to shorten the gearbox input shaft but by how much ? can anyone help ? 
What engine was fitted to your van originally??? if a D/TD... IIRC it doesnt need shortening....
