Alternator Warning Light

Need some input. I'm in the middle of wiring up a split charging unit. All going well except for feed from alternator warning light. When I took feed from under dash, the feed was dead with ignition off, on permanent with engine running. However, if I take the feed directly from the alternator terminal to an earthed bulb, i get nothing whether running or not.
suggestions?

you wont get a bulb to light, use a meter.
best to take the signal for the split charge from the alternator end, mostly because of the risk of getting Discolight dash Syndrome if you mess under there, and partly because its easier , both now and if anything goes wrong later
