Mornin'

I installed a little 4.5kg butane tank in my Westy this weekend, and I was pleased to get a good flame going on the right hand hob. However, I cannot get the left hob to stay lit, it lights when you hold the dial in but as soon as you let it out it goes out.

I tried every combination of time, fast slow etc etc but no luck. I don't mind taking it apart and having a fettle but I don't know what to fettle!

Anyone any ideas?

ps - anyone ever get flames momentarily shooting out of the little air holes next to the dial when you turn the gas off..........

sounds like the control valve is iffy, not familiar with westy ones, but normally if you take them apart and clean them, removing the layer of ukk from the conicle insert that is the regulation they work again...

does the grill work ok ?

You have to press and light them then keep the knob pressed in for the little themal thingy to get hot that keeps it lit and tells it when there is gas etc. Maybe that be is faulty or not there?

Can you elaborate on this please, it works with the knob pressed in but there's no gas coming through at all when I release, this sounds like the problem.

What does this thingy look/feel/sound like??:?:

It's the thinger that stops you gassing yourself when the flame blows out. Normal operation would be it lets gas out when pressed or when there is a flame. Most hobs don't seem to have them so it's tricky to know what it looks like but it will be near enough the flames to detect them and will probably work by means of a bimetalic strip.

Regardless of knowing how it works you will be looking for the bit that is gummed up with muck or actually broken.

Replace the thermo coupling. You need it to keep the valve open when lit and it shuts off the gas if burner goes out so you dont gas yourself.
