I want to change the fuel filter on my 1990 1.6td camper. The current filter has four pipe connections Fuel in to filter then filter to pump and then the return pipe to plastic thingy on filter and plastic thingy to tank. (like the technical terms). I have heard off the forum that these later type filters can be problematical letting air into the system, so what I want to know is there an alternative filter or do i have to replace like with like. Thanks Mark

What you have heard is the 'uninformed' commenting on something they know nothing about. Ask yourself the question......if these filters let air in they would also let diesel out wouldn't they?
Seeing a few air bubbles in the clear plastic pipe is normal...fit the correct filter, fill it up with diesel when fitting (not the old dirty stuff that came out the filter you are replacing) so you keep cranking to a minimum.

Very very wrong.

They don't let air in but trap air which comes with fuel up the lines. Anyone mechanic familiar with vw group diesel will tell you this has been a well known problem since vw started using them, the failure rate of them is silly.

Solution is easy get the 2 hose filter and connect the 2 hoses to the thermostat together, with more modern vw group stuff its a case of keep replacing the theremostat.

something I missed then in the 5 years working at a VAG garage back in the 80's or has this come to light since? tis possible..
My understanding is a bit of air in the low pressure side is normal....I certainly can remember seeing air in the clear pipework and it didn't cause any problems, but hey...what do I know. Now air in the high pressure side....that's a different matter altogether.

Late eightes they started accross the range, they can hold lots of air especially in winter on short journeys which then causes bad starting/running because the thermostat keeps fuel going around in a circle between pump and filter and not realeasing air. PD's are not so bad because fuel gets really hot really quick.
