1.6 Diesel cutting out

Hi all bought a 1.6 diesel van a couple of weeks ago have now done about 300 miles but the engine has started cutting out intermitantly when I drop the clutch. Also have quite a bit of black smoke!

Thought it might be sucking in air so changed the rubber pipes between the injectors but this has made no difference. Anyone any ideas what this could be have spent about two hours looking through old posts but cant seem to find anything. Any help would be greatly appreiciated.

check the pipe from the pump to the filter...if you havnt already
infact check all the pipework from the tank for splitting ,cracking(reminds me..mine STILL needs doing)
and make sure the electrical connection on the pump is not loose

Hi there, like most problems related to Diesel engines the question is where to start when things go wrong. If it was my vehicle I would be changing the cam belt simply for piece of mind, and checking all related items behind the covers while I am at it.
You may find someone has fitted a new belt in the past and might not have got it timed spot on,,,,,,,,these engines will run even if the timing is slightly out of specification, but depending on how far out of spec can 'knock' noticably at worst, and at least Smoke but still run reasonably.
Other than that, a close visual inspection of all fuel supply pipes for signs of chaffing, may be related to your stalling problem (air being drawn in on the fuel supply side of things),,,,,,,,and while you are looking in the engine compartment replacing the fuel filter is always a safe bet (just to eliminate it from the equation as well).
Those pipes you have replaced are simply fuel leak off pipes which return excess fuel to the tank and will have little affect on your present problems.

Is it only cutting out under load, when being driven ? If its been running ok then the timing of the cambelt is unlikly but worth checking. Before you do that its worth checking the valve clearances. They're often not checked and this can cause smoking and other problems. Worth getting your injectors checked as well, I had problems with mine and ended up replacing them all.

Hi thanks for the replies it only cuts out when i'm driving along say in third then when I drop the clutch to go into second the battery light comes on followed by the oil pressure light and the engine goes out if I then lift the clutch the engine sometimes restarts

Does anyone know what the valve clearances should be??

Mine were hydraulic valves - although I am not 100% sure they are supposed to be?

Right then it appears that my problems are more sinister than first imagined. Thought i'd give the van a damn good servicing changed the fuel filter, started draining the oil and while that was draining checked the water level when I looked inside the cap there was a little bit of oil so I stuck my finger inside the reservoir and pulled out a nice black gooey mix of mainly oil with a little bit of coolant, so me suspects the head gasket has gone. Has anyone done a head gasket on one of these (how hard is it to do?!?!) Off to look through old posts. Thanks everyone for your help thus far.

It depends how handy you are but generally speaking they are not bad to do. I think its easier to drop the lot and do it but someone else might say different. They aren't the easiest thing to work on in place due to it being tipped on its side and the cambelt side of things is so much easier with it out.
If you need any of the torque settings or anything else like that give me a shout as I have a workshop manual.

Right well pissed off!!! have taken head off the van now and she is cracked on all 4 cylinders between the valves!

So I am now in the market for either a new (old) head with exhaust manifold (sheared one stud off), a running 1y engine in or out of a car, or a 1.9td aaz or similar but have a distinct shortage of pennies

(spent me savings buying the van) can anyone help please thanks in advance richie

errrr....is that lovely offer not any good - at least in the short term to get you running while you search down a replacement for yours?

she is cracked on all 4 cylinders between the valves!
Nothing wrong with that - they all have cracks - it is perfectly normal on these engines as long as they are only small. There have been lots of questions on these cracks. Mine has them and they do not affect the engine whatsoever.
