1990 1.9DJ - replacing front wheel bearings - questions!

Hello

The off side front wheel bearing had a bit of excess play in it, so have a got a good replacement. started job last night, but found a few problems:

To remove the brake pads on the floating calipers I need a 7mm allen key (not a spanner like it says in the haynes) which i do not have. I thought about taking the brake caliper off without taking pads out first, will that cause a problem?

Also the brake caliper bolts are very tight. I wasn't keen to heat them but i can't seem to get a long enough bar under there with tha van on axlestands... any ideas?

Rather than replace the bearings last night, I ended up taking up the play in the bearing by re-tightening the end nut and peening back in place. There is no play on the road wheel now and it still spins freely.

I didn't tighten excessively, but the thrust washer wasn't moveable with a screwdriver like it says in the book. However, the thrust washer wasn't moveable before I started either. Does that mean that the bearing is likely to be worn and was overtightened before?

Cheers for your help!

to replace both inner and outer front bearings the disc has to come off.
The inner race has to be drifted out of the disc.
that tends to damage the inside of the disc if done with anger... I was replacing the discs anyway so it mattered not

so the calipers have to be removed too.
are you sure they are 7 and not 8mm socket caps?

they go with a crack as they are on effing tight.
time to get grunting with a long bar :D
