Starter motor gone ?

Hi

Van wont start, light will come on. Last time I drove it, I remember thinking it was taking a longer time than normal to start)
Just tried charging the battery with no effect.
Hear clicks when I turn the key (in the front , cant make out if the solenoid is clicking as im too far from engine bay)

Hoping that a few taps to the starter motor will do the trick, but I cant seem to find it, the haynes manual just shows a tiny graint cylinder somewhere near a universal joint of some description.

If the taps dont work, what am i looking at to get a new one ?

above the gearbox, close to the engine. Check all connection to it before declaring it dead

Mine does that.
Lie on your back and crawl under to the rear of the offside rear wheel. Starter motor is tucked up above the drive shaft, and just reachable with a hammer (bit hard with a rock, but can be done if you are stuck in a field).
That sometimes sorts mine out (particularly if it is after a cold night's camping). Other times, just continually switching off and retrying does the trick.

Found it (thru wheel arch)
Gave it a few taps and tried umpteen times to start it...not a glimmer.

Only had a new starter motor last year as well :(

so while you were bashing it, did you notice if the signal wire(10mm spade connection) was connected? its common for them to either carrode and fall off or corrode and stay on, but not connect? take it off and clean it.....
its also commom for the main battery lead to corrode, but you would see that.......

On the same theme make sure your earth lead has a good connection to the chasis. on the front end of the gearbox. As already posted, starter motors need alot of current so any rust wont help.

Yeah all the connections were pretty solid.

Been looking at the GSF motors....do they ask for a surcharge if you dont provide the old one ? Not obvious from the Aircooled catalogue
