Autosleeper Probs

I own a 1988 Autosleper 2.1L Petrol which I bought 6 months ago & am fairly new to the vehicle.
Main Problem : Van is cutting out when I take my foot off accelerator (junctions, etc).
Jump starts without any difficulty & runs well (engine sounds fine) but I suspect high fuel consumption.
Exhaust fumes are gettting progressively smoky black. Recently ran out of fuel. Any ideas as to possible problems? I assume its automatic choke but uncertain. Any advice ?
Oh...Also - I filled van petrol tank (past the 'click') and petrol dripped from both hoses either side of van behind front wheels. Is this normal? (I just 3/4 fill tank currently & all seems ok).

hoses are perished and will let water into your tank eventually
renew hose

Kev you might want ot rethink that answer, clue is in the 2.1, they are fuel injected as you are quite aware.
Main problem with these is overfueling and it is usual for the front blue temperature sensor to break down telling the ecu that the engine is constantly cold thus putting in its cold start cycle, start the engine and take off the plug to the sensor, jumper it with a piece of wire and it should stop its chugging, other than that there are a good set of diagnostics to do, get yourself a bentley manual for the 2.1 if you want to have a bash or go to a garage that know these engines

Cheers guys thats a big help.
am now going to take it over to a local VW (classics) garage next week to get it looked over as Im not mechanically minded. Will let you know of the outcome.

Just to let you know (Kevtherev & Steve 8090)- 2.1 Autosleeper is back on road & running like a dream.
My local specialist ran tests & identified the air flow meter unit as being faulty & has replaced.
(The ICU was checked and found to be working).
Also one of the Fuel Injectors was not atomising properly & has been sorted with additive & clean. Distributer cap, plugs & cables all replaced.
Hoping that keeps us running happily for the summer hols.
