Hi All,

My 1980 van has just failed it's MOT due to the indicator LED on the dash not working.
Upon further investigation it turns out that the PCB on the instrument pod has been hacked around a bit and there's even a broken track or two which look like they link up to the indicator LED. There's no voltage getting to the led, and testing the board/linking together the broken track doesn't seem to help.

Is there a way to bypass the whole pcb and connect the the wire from the muli-connector straight to the LED?

I know there is a resistor in between, which I could wire in, but other than that are there any complications with attempting this? Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Would like more details of the exact fault as it may be possible to repair.

You will need to establish the colour code and pin/conx number of the Main Beam wire at the multipin connector and then tap into it. You can use a LED but it must be a 80mcd Standard Blue Diffused type with a 10k resistor to operate at the correct 'tell tale' brightness. These are available from Maplin and Rapid Online. The LED will need to be connected to the appropriate wire at the connector and to chassis by which ever method is convenient. Where you fit it is up to you, expansion slot under the warning display, run light gauge cable behind the flexi pcb and into the warning display cluster, etc. Ask if you need more info.......part numbers, etc.

I have Blue diffused LED's with integral Resistor and a LED socket (simplifies wiring) as long as you don't mind paying for the cost of the components, with P&P about £2-50 (and perfect for Main Beam LED application, anyone who says LED's are unsuitable for Main Beam has never seen it done correctly!)
