overheating?

WHen idling, the needle on the temp gauge sits in the middle of the gauge, covering the red light, after a while the fan may come on for a few minutes then cut out, all very well and good.
when driving, the needle sits just to the right of the light, and the fan tends to come on either for long periods of time, or click rapidly on and off manically, or just flip on for a few seconds. this doesnt seem right to me...
added to this is the oprblem i have had for some time, of the needle and light combo - needle scooting to the top, usually after 50+ miles, but not always, then coming down after a little while.
garage has been unable to detect any overheating, and say fan comes on at right time etc, but then they have only idled it, and not driven it up the A1...
any thoughts or anything i should be worried about?
