Nice job, get some formica type facing for it.
Or paint it with a good acrylic paint.

Nice neat looking job there, I'd be interested to know how you get on with covering and edging as I'm making some units from MDF which seems to have the same durability characteristics as papier mache. I'm liking the sound of acrylic paint.

Yeah we were offered some free, but it weighed a ton and i had the same concerns as you.
I have a trick up my sleeve for the edging...but it may be a while yet....cash is low

I think the MDF I used is lighter than whatever was in there before (Autohomes) but ply might have been better. I'd already bought a few sheets and cut it up before coming to the conclusion that it was the wrong choice, oh well. I think if I could water-proof it and protect the edges it might do the job.

Wood aint cheap....im sure it will be fine when its sealed with an acrylic based paint.
If its any consolation, the finish will be far better
