Rear wheel hub for a syncro 16

After changing wheel bearings on the rear of my van I now have a rubbing noise when veering slightly to the right and when turning right. Noise is coming from the rear nearside.
I'm told the hub is likely to be worn and I am now in search of this item. VW say NLA; CJ has gone walkabout and according to ETKA this is a syncro 16 specific part 251 503 253 D
Anyone know the difference between the 14 and 16 hub? I expect its bearing size etc...
Any ideas, get rounds, insights or pointers gladly received; and if anyone has one can they get in touch; thanks.

The hub is 16-specific because the drive flange is bigger for the 108mm CVJ's. When the bearings were changed did the output shaft seem worn at the bearing seats ? It is something to check for.
PS. Check the inner drive flanges as well, do either have excessive play or gear oil loss ?

The hub is 16 specifit due to the mounting points of the back plate. The trailing arm side uses the same mounting dimensions.(you can use a 14 hub on a 16 arm but only with 14 brakes)
The bearings are the same on 14's as 16's. I know vw quote different part numbers but they are the same.
A 14 drive flange will fit a 16 and vise verse with using the correct drive shaft.
There is unfortunatly no other vehicle that uses a 16 rear hub so your search for a replacement will be hard.

Thanks guys; at 200,000km I suppose it is to be expected? Would there be be anything in the reassembly that could cause this; just in case Im barking up the wrong tree?
(the noise was not there before the bearing change)

Simple things first, just check the rear backplate has not been bent and is catching on the drum, would make a noise when cornering.
CJ did have some 16" trailing arms, but he only wanted to sell the pair complete, understandably, was about a year ago.

Hopefully it' something trivial Mark and not the Hub itself. I thought it was a 16" specific part - but interesting to hear the workaround that Russel suggests.
IIRC CJ had those complete arms on the Samba, just after Christmas this year, for £1000......

I know its prob a daft question... but you did the nut up flippin tight didnt you??? 357 ftlbs.... (is it different on a 16"?)
I can understand the stub axle is different as the cv joint diameter is bigger.. but the bearings only have the same size hole in them so why the splines and hub be different if the bearings are the same??
Bearing housing (mounted on the swingarm) yes that must/poss has different hole positions for the "LT" backing plate etc...
Or am I missunderstanding something here???

I asked about the nut torque and got one of those roll eyes looks that only a 'professional' can give to a customer !
VW have the hub still listed at 80odd pounds but 0 stock; so will have to wait and see if its a definite no from VW Germany. In the mean time I will be taking a look see at the assembly and back plate.

Yeah but was it a 350 odd ft lbs "roll of the eyes"????
once they have been driven up the road they loose some...

Update: 359 ft/lbs did not make a difference; new hub came in from VW today two weeks ahead of promised delivery date
I will let you know if its the cure or a wild goose chase
