Not my bus but as im currently mechanic in cheif i'll ask questions.
Coolant in oil. I've been reading little bits so far about coolant dripping from parts of the engine which the vehicle also has but not knowing the layout of the heads on a 1.9 w/b then i need to ask questions. Is there a test i can do i.e. if i do a compression test am i likely to find a duff cylinder or is it unrelated to that i.e water jackets etc.
I'm an Aircooled man at the moment so oil in coolant has never been a problem i've dealt with since i dumped my Dutton Sierra.

could be that the head has gone or it could be that the head was replaced a while ago and the cooling system was never flushed out, which is what i would be doing first.
Could be that the cooling system has a leak else were and has been sucking in air and been getting topped up with all differant kinds of crap coolant.
If it is the head or the sealing gasket then its not the end of the world unless the studs snap.
Have a good read on te wiki about bleeding the cooling system.

Replacing the head gaskets is a possibility only if the head studs haven't snapped... and so long as they don't snap when you try to undo them.
If they snap, its difficult to find anyone who can replace them without wanting to take on a complete engine rebuild (which is what it would mean as you usually have to drill them out).
Have a look for a 2nd hand 1900 DG engine on here, Brickyard and Just Kampers forums. Either that or buy a new engine from Heritage or Vege.

Yeah we refilled it yesterday. the bleed screw wouldnt come out but i got it fairly full.
But the coolant did bubble and filled with a little more sludge. which could have just been collected from us disturbing the pipes.
any ideas on clearing the sludge out btw??

hi,
guess what...we,ve just sent a van off for new engine for this very problem.
Lots of sludge in coolant. Flushed out as advised by 80-90 Rustybus with hosepipe into one of pipes to rad - undo another in the sytem (think we used one near theromstat housing - but others may suggest other) literally turned on tap and kept goin till all the rusty stuff ran away.
plumbed back in, refilled and tried again. No sludge, but still air in expansion tank, water seeping around the rubber gasket, and for added effect, coming out the bottom too!!!! At which point we decided that since bodywork was good, and van cost us £100, we would bit bullet and stick 2.1 in....so off it went to Elite on Friday! Will let you know.
