VW T25 1982 Auto transmission not starting

Hi All
I am having a problem starting my VW t25 Aircooled 2lt with automatic transmission. This problem first manifested itself when i was turning the key and it was intermittently not starting when in park, I then had to put it in neutral to start it and now it won't start at all. I had a recovery guy come out to see it, as when it wouldn't start I was away from home, and he managed to jump it from underneath the van. The battery is fine, and it clicks when it try's to start. once started the engine ticks over ok.
I'm not too sure how this all works but am trying to build up my knowledge. There was a small spark from the gearbox when it was playing up, so I had a sneaking suspiscion that it was a loose connection, but all cables seem to be connected ok.
Can someone suggest a course of action as i'm stumped.
I have posted a picture of what it looks like under the gearbox casing as that's where I was looking for a loose connection, all seems to be connected.
