1.9 diesel T25?

From what reading I've done I understand that this was never a standard engine so the Camper that I'm going to see must have had this put in at some point. Is it a good upgrade or not? Bloke reckons he gets 35+mpg from it, is that realistic?

It turns a very slow van into a slow van so worth doing.. Engine is usually a 1Y code out of a Golf.
35mpg is about right on a run.
I get 30mpg around town and 35mpg on a run
