my shaft is worn (in a gearbox way)

Sorry for the subject title, but it's true:

The lever/balljoint that attaches to the gearbox gearshift shaft is worn out. The splines on the lever/balljoint are severely worn and the splines on the gearshift shaft are badly worn. I've managed to fix it temporarily with washers and excessive torque on the securing nut, but I wonder if anyone has come across this problem. My options appear to be:

1.Get a new lever/balljoiint(the fresh splines may bite reasonably on the worn shaft

2. Replace gearshift shaft (don't want to do this unless it is possible with gearbox in)

3. Weld knackered lever/balljoint to shaft

Any comments or suggestions welcome

If the shaft on the gearbox is worn, then the only way to do it properly is to remove and replace (to use the words of Haynes!)...

The shaft is dead and so is the lever by the sounds of it, so you could weld it on (bodge) just until you find another gearbox... not very nice but it'll get you going again!
