For some reason I'm finding hard to source the allen head bolts which secure the water pump pulley. The current ones will almost certainly snap when I attempt removal as they will not move but they have to!!

Anyone any bright ideas? I've tried the usual suspects JK. GSF, VW Heaven, Megabug and other local suppliers. The engine is a 1.6TD 1989.

Any help much appreciated.

Try your local fastener suppliers ... the socket head screws will only be standard off the shelf items .. if in doubt go for the 12.9 high tensile option ... most are at least 8.8 anyway.

The WBX pulley screws are hex head but M6 x 12 IIRC

Out of interest, can anyone explain the different tensile strength ratings in terms of application suitability? I'm thinking that applications such as rear trailing arm mounting bolts, shock bolts etc. should be high tensile rated, so how do the various grades match up to those applications - e.g. is an 8.8 good enough or should you go with 12.9? Confusingly, a lot of bolts are listed as "A2 stainless" which doesn't relate to tensile strength at all, right?

Don't know if they would be the same, but I had to get some for my 82 scirocco a while back and I was pleasantly surprised at the price.

The tensile strength is normally only used in the strength of the thread itself ... i.e. you can tighten them up more, of course the plain 'shoulder' on bolts is often used as a swivel too so need to be stronger than 'mild' steel.

From memory the trailing arm bolts and the shock absorber bolts are 8.8 ... they dont actually receive the shock themselves. If you look at the VAGCAT listing it tells you the length and tensile rating

The A2 in A2 stainless is the material itself ... i.e. A2 A4.

Thanks Ian. Had a quick look at vagcat, but shock was listed as: hexagonal head bolt M12X1,5X65 and trailing arm bolt was similarly spec'd, but that was just a sample so there may well be ratings listed for others. Anyhow, not needing to get any of these just yet, just interested. Cheers, J
