I started my yesterday and it sounded really lumpy, but after it warmed up it ran fine. I went to start it this morning and it backfired. You know the kind that breaks glass. Now the only thing I had done before starting it is replace the air filter so I dont think this would be the problem.

I had the timing done about two months ago so I wouldnt have thought it would be this - Please tell me if I am wrong - Is there a chance that the timing could go out?

About a month ago I had a varb refrurbishment with Gasure so I think it would be the carb gaskets. Hainf said that I am assuming the Steve replaced the gaskets.

Any ideas what this could be. I reallt need it sorted as I have Busstopover soon and Campervam

PS I do have a inkling that my exhaust could be blowing a little

ellow, my advice as i'm in asimular boat! sort the exhaust leak 1st & check everywhere that should be airtight is!
check sparkplugs are tightened in to correct torque, just check eveything over after sorting the leaking exhaust, then proceed with checking mixture/timing etc

Well i have checked over my exhaust system and I can really find where it is blowing. The heat exchangers are knackered but as I understand it the exhuast just goes sraight through the exchangers and is completly sealed.

I have attached some pics of my heat exchangers

Here is the first one with some rot around where the exchanger joins the sillencer



And the second one does even have any casing at all


Another question I have is do I need to take some tinware off to see the exhasut manifold or can I get to them from underneath.

get some new exhchangers or weld the best one up! & cut the reminants of the worst one off, if the bolts come undone after a week of spraying then with wd-40 then the exhaust/exchangers will come off in one but i find it better to unbolt the silencer & take that off 1st, get new gaskets & RTV HIGH-TEMP sealent cheap from GSF, some cheapo barbaque paint from b&q & clean up what you have & paint it & bolt it back on! see how you go then bud
