Hi

having just suffered a gear box failure and now with an expensive 5 speed recon gearbox,
have just fitted the short shift kit - which is great, but I thought it would be a good idea to rebush the gearbox linkage to achieve maximum benefit.


I'm having a bit of difficulty in locating all the parts can anyone advise as to where I can get the following replacement bits:

shift guides -
boot, spring and guide pin
all shown in the first picture below - in the shift mechanism housing below the gear lever



also the front bushing, rear bushing and knuckle joint components from picture below


I did check the wiki but couldn't match up the part numbers conclusively -duh!!

and even so haven't located a source.

I'm also interested to know more about replacing the nylon sleeves at the end of the gear lever as shown on the wiki https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Im ... 800%29.jpg

Just kampers also sell some of the bits or you could even try VW

forgot to say that have already fitted the gear leaver repair kit from Brickwerks, which has helped alot.

any thoughts on sourcing the shift guides and the boot and spring in the selctor box under the lever? i haven't seen these anywhere on the web.

I have recenly replaced all these items. Didnt mess about wit the web as when i looked there seemed to be about a billion variations of the little clips and bushes. I went to vw gave them my chassis number and returned the next day to recieve my big box of goodies, Every pin,bush,slider,mount,washer,spring and doodad that is in the linkage. wasnt that expensive really, didnt take that long to fit. Very worth while i enjoy driving my van even more now

but what is "wasn't that expensive really" mean?

my definition is influenced by the amount I had to pay for the recon gearbox

I have taken the advice and tried VW dealer for the linkage parts - has made life easier than hunting the web and as was said "not too expensive really".


However the VW dealer has identified a few parts that they say are obsolete any ideas where to source the following bits

the 2 guide blocks at the bottom of the shift mechanism housing (in the top pic)
the guide pin and boot at the end of the gear lever (also in top pic)

also surprisingly the "bushing rear"(in the bottom pic) which they say is different to the "bushing front" (also in bottom pic) which is available.

JK etc seem to have them both as the same part - anyone got any info on this?

They are different and your right in saying JK list them as the same as I found out when I ordered mine.
Both bushes are shown in the ebay link I posted earlier.If you order them from JK you get two of the clear looking ones

my shift guides are completely chewed to bits any idea where i can source these from and ideally the rest of the parts located in the shift box.

need a new stick as i'm sick of getting it welded and the shift blocks and parts in the box.

its a 5 speed.

Shift guides can be built up again by any competent ally welder. Yes they are obsolete.

any competent ally welders out there who'd like to start knocking some up?

Just an update, J.K. still supply the wrong rear bush, v w heritage get it right.

i think i am going to do this. any tips before i do it, and can someone PM me with a price from vw for this box of goodies that is "reasonable". is it pretty simple if you observe a systematic way to doing it, or are some bits a bit tricky? also, should this make the gearbox a lot more positive and less in the way of travel, crunch and will it make it easier to get into gear? i was going to twist one spline anticlockwise near the collar but would rebushing mean that i won't need to? thanks.
