Hey all! I have a 1984 1.6d t3 and if the van is left for more than 4 days without starting, It takes loads of cranking to get it to start.

When you turn the key, the engine fires for a micro second, then nothing, you just have to sit there turning the engine over for about 30 seconds before it gradually starts to missfire, then starts up.

Ignition advance/choke does not help or differ the issue.

Fine when attempt to start it within 4 days, only when the vans not started for a long period of time?

Thanks for your help guys, what wrong here?

How long have you had the van?

If I dont press my throttle all the way down and then turn it over it wont start at all. And if I miis it when it starts to fire then it floods and wont start for 30 seconds.

I just leave it if that happens and try again in 30 seconds

Paul

PS you might want to check the condition of your spark plugs. Give em a cclean

Must learn to read the posts properly - SparK Plugs

Replace the diesel fuel filter&ensure you have no airleaks.Glow plugs not working can cause non starting .I had a non starting problem as discribed cause was leaky injector return hoses.Due to perished & cracked rubber pipes leaked out fuel.

sounds like the fuel is not there....can it run back to the tank....the microsend fire is what is in the injectors...then no fuel left until the pump has dragged it all the way from the tank again?

Just a guess....and could be a complete load of smelly stuff - sure a tractor expert will be along to advise soon enough. I remembered reading about a return valve on diesels....

I had to fit a non return valve on the fuel line from the filter to the pump as for some reason I was having starting problems, did the trick.

I put diesel fuel return in the search engine and searched in technical using an advanced search
