Hi everyone. I need a bit of advice please. My 1.9 watercooled petrol engine (running on LPG) has developed a really bad oil leak. I have been told by someone who knows better than me that the oil is coming from the crank oil seal which is bad news. What should I do now? Is it an engine out job? Should I look for a replacement engine? I've been advised that this leaking seal is normally a sign of a worn crank shaft and I might as well replace the engine as the problem will re-occur. If I do need a new engine where do I look? I'm a bit green when it comes to this sort of thing so any advice is very much appreciated!

A new engine is a little OTT for a £1 seal!


I've done both ends on my 2l CU engine. The flywheel one was hardest due to having to drop the engine. the oter was easy and done in place.


It 'could' be worn crank but please remember that little rubber seal will wear before the big metal bits.

Also check your not over filling with oil and the sump breather pipe isn't blocked. This causes pressure in the sump and makes the oil blow out anything it can...

1.9 DG rear seal = easy, front seal = gearbox out, clutch out, flywheel off, replace rear seal (~£3) and flywheel mounting screws (~£7 for the 5) check condition of clutch (probably the 228mm size) very carefully but unless totally dry and very new I'd replace it anyway.

If your 'mate' say's you need a new engine you need new mates that know their posterior from their elbow ... perhaps you'll find them here

Phew! Thank goodness! Thanks for the advice. Probably a really stupid question but could you give me an idea where I'll find the sump breather pipe please? Obviously that is the first thing to have a look at (if I knew what I was looking for!) and go from there.

On top of your carburretor is a black 'beret' looking cap, this has a thick duct going to the air filter housing and a thinner (30mm) hose which curls it's way to the black tower shaped breather tower. This is available from Brickwerks :- http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/index.php?p ... t&Itemid=6

Glad to help

Just pull the breather off on the air filter end and when the engine is running you should feel air coming out.
