Not Starting Woes / Help

Hi. This is probably my own fault and I'm hoping you guys can clarify what I suspect. My 1.9 Petrol van has been a very healthy starter/runner, other than a bit of unsureness when it changes over from cold air/hot air and the autochoke adjusts after starting.

I came back after a long run with a very empty tank and parked the van on a slope, leaning to the left. Came back to it a few days later and it started initially, then immediately stopped.

I'm guessing there wasn't enough fuel to start it or the fuel pickup was not submersed properly, I put some fuel in and tried again but no luck. Have pushed the van to somewhere flat now and put a bit more fuel in, approx 12L.

I reckon I flattened the battery a bit trying to start it.

Have charged the battery, engine turns over, still won't start. I guess it takes a while to pull the fuel through from the tank and certainly the fuel filter is a bit grubbier than previously but I would have thought It'd manage to fire after a while.

Turns over OK, just not starting. Ignition connections seem OK. Any ideas?

Michael

Sounds like you've blocked you fuel filter with the gunge in the bottom of the tank, as Emm ( hiya :ok ) say's chamge filter and you'll be off and running again.

Ian.

This has happened to me twice!

Both times I flattened the battery trying to get the fuel through(1.9inj') & finally got it started on the second(spare) battery.

From what you say about parking on a left side camber I'd hazard that it's definitely fuel starvation, you'll just have to recharge your battery & keep trying until it starts.

Best of luck.

Nice to have my suspicions confirmed, thanks folkes!

I thought about priming the carb but was filled with dread visions of engine bay fires. Recommendations for do's and donts?

Changed filter, charged battery, sucked fuel through line, dripped some fuel down carb. Patience/ Stubbornness.

However, what I think is important is there seems to be an air-lock develops if you empty the tank. After I put some fuel in, the gauge moved a little with the ignition switched on but when the van cracked into life the gauge shot up. - before it started, even with the fuel filter hanging down from the tank, nothing was coming through with 12L of petrol in the tank. I reckon if anyone is in the same situation, it might be worth BLOWING through the line from that point - it might just break the air-lock.

Of course, I could be completely wrong... 8)
