The fuel pump on my 1990 1.6td(JX) has sprung a leak. When running, diesel seeps out from the triangular headed bolt on the side of the pump body
(these locate the governor lever arm inside the pump) Now how the heck do I get it out? as no standard socket sets will fit it . All the thing needs is a new washer ..but I'm stumped ,how do VW do it???

they will have the correct tool for the job.ring simon crawford,he may just know a way of removing it.

Don't undo that bolt, it hold something in place in the pump who's name escapes me at the moment (anathetic, great) but if you do you will hear a tinkle noise and then your van probably won't work anymore.

Thanks Rob ,Simon Crawford is on holiday until next tuesday..DOH..And Simon the bolt holds the governor lever arm and has a matching one on the other side, so theoretically it should stay in place. the question is how do I fix the leak?? My Father in law found some photo's of a guy who striped down one of these pumps and took photos along the way so I'm fairly confident it wont fall apart if I can get the Bolt out. :

Ok after some more research..Simon Baxter was right. The pump will have to come off to be dismantled and seals replaced only then can the triangular headed bolt be removed and washers replaced. I would have knacked the pump if I had tried to take the bolts out insitu. Anyone know any one good at overhauling diesel fuel pumps and what its likely to cost me?
