which 2.1ltr DJ engine rebuild for T25 VW syncro?

I am looking for either a low mileage 2.1ltr DJ engine or getting a recon unit for our 1986 Syncro which has LPG conversion.

Besides trying to get one at a better price thats gone from £900 to £1600 in 8 yrs can anyone comment on the most consistantly reliable units as we want one to get us round another long trip abroad.

Heritage sell Remtec and Volkspares sell Vega.
Now I had a Vega from Volkspares on our old 73 Bay and it took us round France no problem. But I have seen a lot of adverse comments about both engine rebuild makes.
So I would be interested to hear comments from those who have had rebuilt 2.1litre DJ engines as to who did the rebuild and what reliability, have you had.
Do the new engines leak, are noisy, have had to go back, that sort of thing.
Also I have searched the web but cant find anyone else that supplies rebuilt engines. Can anyone suggest "The third option" of going to a specialist that rebuilds them. Obviously I want a guarentee with it and dont want to spend over the odds either.
If you can help let me know

Well I got my 2.1WBX removed, rebuilt and re-installed from Elite at Basildon for under £1K and have no reason to suspect that I got anything other than a first class job. The three Micks (Thats Micheal not the other non-PC kind) do not speak posh and the building is a bit agricultural but they seem to make all the right noises and were good to their word. Apparently my crankshaft had previously been re-ground with one end at 0.050" and was therefore replaced. The engine was very clean and I have all my own bits back including my 90A alternator. Time will tell but I couldn't fault the service so far.
Cheers

Hi
We replaced ours with a Remtec (before really knowing about the other specialists on here admittedly) and have been more than happy with it. It was quite pricey, but that was over 2 yaers ago, I hate to think what they cost now!!. Done 30,000km + on it now and it's been perfect, never missed a beat.
So, purely from personal experience, Remtec gets a big :ok We plan on keeping the van for a long time & when we first stripped the old one it seemed to make ecconomic sense to do an exchange rather than refurb what was there ourselves. Budget for a new exhaust (and clutch whilst it's in bits) too.

the parts alone to rebuild my last dj came to way more than 1k plus then time / labour. with most garages charging £300 to swap motors so as you can see theres no way an elite recon will be a rebuilt motor with all new parts for that price.

what you will get from elite is not a fully rebuilt unit but if summat is broke a less broke bit gets fitted, fine for a budget recon but personally i would spend a little more and get a proper recon one.

i had a vege in my first wedge and it was a dream!!!

do a search for reccomendations there is good and bad with all of em.
