Tappet
If you do a search on here there is a ton of stuff.

They leak down as they are hydraulic, .
causes.
Short runs
lack of use
oil needs changing
ditto filter
someones tatted with it and mal adjusted it.
busted

the easy way to cure it is oil and filter (I use a good mineral 20/50) and then a good 20 min run out with vigorous revs.
If that don't work then you can reset the offending tappet

When I had a noisey tappet I found that one of the adjusters had unscrewed or was badly set. That made it impossible for the tappet to fill with oil as there was no preload on it

If you read about the tappets you would have noticed that you can reset a noisy one.
I did it this way.
Warm up the engine a bit (5mins) to pump up the tappets.
took off the rocker cover
Rotated the engine till No.1 was on the firing stroke (TDC)
pushed by hand the rockers on No.1 over the pushrod to see if there was any movement on inlet and exhaust.
did the same for No. 2
If there was any movement ( felt squishy )
I backed the adjuster right off untill the rocker was loose on the valve and rod.
then tightened it back up by hand till finger tight.
used the screwdriver to tighten it a further two turns and locked it off.

took it for a long run and it worked.
if it doesn't then the tappet is shagged.

Not to undermine what KtR say's but these engines need using .... Change the oil (15/40 mineral) run that engine for 20 minutes and I'll guarantee the tappets will STFU :D

Welcome to the Club BTW :ok

Ian.

Hello,
I've got a G reg Petrol T25 with a DG engine and it sounds exactly the same as that video tape. I took the advice of changing oil and filter and it has made no difference. I drove on the motorway with it yesterday and for approx 30secs half way through journey (20mins) there was excess smoke from the exhaust, we're not talking smokescreen or anything but enough to get you a bit panicked.
Now that, with the rattling tappets is starting to concern me, I think it means oil is getting somewhere it shouldn't and therefore burn off causing the smoke???
I took it to a gerneral mechanic who was recommended to me as decent and he said that the pushrod/tappet must have gone through something in the engine and he had recently fixed the same thing on a T25 which cost £800!!! :(
I spoke to another person who said it was more likely that one of the tappets had snapped off and another who said they just needed adjusting.
I have previously had a fiesta and adjusted the tappets on them with a spanner and metal tappet gauge things, that was fairly straight forward. I have heard that you can't adjust the hydraulic tappets or more that you shouldn't.......is this the case?
Please help. Changing oil and filters has not changed anything and with the weather as it is I just want to get out and explore!!
Cheers people......
