I've recently failed an MOT because the led on the dashboard that flashes when the idicators are on is broken.

I replaced the LED but this didn't do the trick
I've also tested both the old and new LED to check they are ok, and they both work.

So what should my next step be? I'm a little worried that I won't get this fixed within the 10 days where I get a free retest.

Any help or advice appreciated

Have you checked for power at the bulb holder?
and continuity for the earth?

Folow the track along the PCB from the LED and you will find a 470 ohm resistor which often fails.

ok, so not lookinglike there is any power at the bulb holder.

Pretty sure i've spotted the resistor (it's got lots of coloured stripes). How do I go about taking this out/replacing it?

The Indicator LED is sourced from the ignition feed to the flexi pcb so you should have +12V on one side of the resistor (unusual for these to go and I would check the flexi track to the resistor from conx 8 of the multiconnector). Check that it is actually open circuit either by measuring across it or checking that you have voltage on one side but not the other.

To replace it if faulty, cut the leads as close as possible to the body of the resistor and carefully bend the remnant leads (that are crimped to the flexi pcb) outwards at 90 degrees to the flexi pcb. Wrap the new resistor around each of the protruding remnants away from the flexi pcb to avoid damaging it with excess heat. Once the resistor is secured carefully solder it to form a permanent connection. If you need pics then I can upload 'how to do'.
