Have done a compression test and it is not good - zero on number 1 cylinder and very low on number 4- basically my mechanic recons it is not worth spending money to check any further and he suggests getting a new engine
not sure what to do next?
go for a second hand one? or a recon? or a vege?
he said he will fit it for 200 quid - does this sound ok?

If you go for a s/hand one off ebay or the likes then you take your chance on what you get.
Go for a recon if you can afford it, and a 1.9td at that.
All depends on your wallet.
£200 sounds OK for the guy to fit it perfectly and get all systems running again, its not exactly a 5 minute job.

£200 is bl**dy good..if you intend on keeping the van i would/did go for a recon unit when mine gave up the ghost...

Don't really want a second hand...
Choice seems to be either recon by a local specialist or go for a vege.
Anyone had any experience with the local boys in the north west area?
There is one in Darwen that is a VW diesel only specialist.
What about goung for a VEGE without the injection equipment etc.

VEGE seem to have question marks over their 1.6TD engines of late.
Have you tried Syncronutz in Shotts (bit of a haul, but excellent technical knowledge - speak to Russel on 0786 780 4816) or how about Central VW (0151 355 1246) on the Wirral? Both of those outfits do either 1.9AAZ or TDI conversions which will provide you with a proper engine with proper power and probably better economy.

I like the sound of an AAZ but a scrap engine is a gamble.
I think I will get it reconditioned locally - been quoted a grand including fitting from a few places - just need to choose which one really...

maybe a grand was optimistic...
if my garage mate can't pull something out of the bag tomorrow then I will probably send it here - AW Engineering in Darwen -
http://vwenginerecon.co.uk - VW diesel specialist.
Gonna be £1150 + vat to fully recon and fit.
Anyone ever heard of them?
