Dear VW,
OK, you've had your fun. Now please tell me where you hid the thermostat. :? It's a 1.6 diesel from a 1986 van.

Have you looked in the thermostat housing?
Follow the large hose from the radiator - lower one, two bolts to remove flange, cunningly concealed inside rear of water pump.If your lucky!

Obviously not a jammed thermostat then!
The "workings" were removed with a chisel by the look of it, side cutters would have been easier. I'll back flush the pipes though, just in case it's still in there.

People do that to them in the mistaken belief that it will cure overheating but all it does is make it worse - it stops the correct circulation by removing the back pressure.

I think so but I'm still shell shocked.
Do you remember saying you need to learn more about these vans? Well now's your chance! Engine change soon and plenty of bodywork, including grinding and rubbbing down!!
I'll be in touch.

Well the manual I got was written in German and my French friend translated it for my Swedish au pair (and oh! what a pair) who then translated it into English. I'm sure this is how they said to change the thermostat! No mention of looking under a wheel though! :?
I think the van needs a wiper. Now then, where might they be? :idea (in the sink maybe)
At least I can joke about my misfortune. Don't know why, but that's the sort of bloke I am.
