Crunching gearbox & oil on the drive?

Hi guys and gals,we recently came back from a week in wales, which was evenful on the way home, basically when say,you stop at a junction and try and get first it grinds and crunches but will not go into gear,so i try to get it into 2nd and with a little crunching it goes in and once were going along there is no problem with the other gears, and i cant remember any clutch slip, but dont hold me to that,il let you know.
Anyway we nipped in halfords when we got home and when we came out there was a 6 inch diameter puddle of oil on the floor of the car park,so we limped back home(about 1.25 miles) and when we got ot on the drive it was leaking a little bit of oil from the join of the bell housing and the engine, but not a lot,its not from the gearbox drain plug or the sump plug, and obviously we havent used it since, any ideas?
By the way its an 1982 2.0l Aircooled
cheers steve n liz
