hazard lights no working

kay, well, the van we've been doing up for our friend has just failed its' mot,.
needs a few things but it's not as bad as i thought..
the one thing that's had me stumped though is the lack of hazard lights..
i've tried a known working relay & switch (from our other van) & still get the same
result ( or lack of one )
nothing happens without the ignition on, no clicking or flashing,
'with' the ignition on the indicator light on the dash comes on constant but the lights
aren't on outside,
the indicators themselves work..
i've cleaned up all the earth crowns ect & replaced a lot of the spades on some of the wires
there..
can anyone tell me what i might be missing & what else might be on that circuit,
i just can't do wiring diagrams, they make me
many thanks

Is the van pre or post '86 ?
Reason I ask is that there is a difference in the fuses. Are they bullet type (Ceramic) or blade type ?
From the Haynes wiring diagram which I have, the Hazard lights get their supply from fuse 4 and this is independant from the ignition switch.
However earlier models are shown as using fuse 9 for hazard lights and this is not shown in the wiring diagram, but may also power the radio.
Fuse 19 supplies the direction indicator (Turn signal) lights but only with ignition ON. (This fuse number presumably on later models, fuse 11 for earlier)
First thing to check would be the fuse........No. 4 blade or (No. 9 bullet).

sorry i'm a tw@ & i meant to ad that tis an 82 diesel,
& i also forgot to ad that i've checked the number 9, the fuse
is fine & all the connections behind it are intact..
the stereo i've got going elsewhere i think (number 12 actually because it wouldn't turn off on
a constant live- but that's another story

)... anyway, i've disconnected the
radio & the fag lighter live wires from the fuse & it's made no difference,
thankyou for replying

He! He!
I've just sorted exactly the same problem on Emmas van! Turned out to be the earth connection behind the fuse box.
Now... I know you have checked and cleaned them but try giving each one a wiggle while the hazard light switch is on. Also make sure an earth lead hasn't dropped off and been missed... Easily done with the jumble of wires behind there!

And the''re still working too!!
As are the running lights in my indicators....I managed to put the little bulbs in all by myself!!

Mark did the compliated wiring bit! I tested them though - seems I can operate a switch in the dash!!!
Runner - I had indicators, no hazzards, no side lights and the dash illumnation had also gone! A really odd assortment, all sorted by replacing an earth spade. Mark also sorted a couple of loose-ish wires in the main fuse box.
Hope you sort it!

Mine was like this when I got it. I changed the relay in the fuse box for the hazards and this made no difference, so i took off the wires on the back of the fuse box and cleaned the spade connectors up. Immediate result with nice working hazards. Hope urs is as easy. My van is a 1985 1.9dg.
good luck

hey, thanks for the replies, i decided in the end to leave it up to the garage,
they have to do a ball joint & refit the roll bar (that we'd taken off because it needed a new
drop link thing & we didn't think we'd get it done in time, we'd read that you can get away
with not having the anti-roll bar for the mot
wrong) so for him doing the hazard light will
be easy, don't like being beat though, but it probably was an earth,
thanks again, especially Mark

garage man told me to take it to an auto electrician becuase he's had enough!
i've wriggled & jiggled wiring behind the fuses & even had them working briefly, but i don't know
how
now all i'm getting is a buzzing relay everytime i switch the hazard switch- still, more of a
reaction than i 'was' getting
thanks for reading

Buzzing relay is definatly an earth fault. I can guarantee that one as Emmas had exactly the same symptoms when I was half way through getting hers going! Sorted earth with new crimp spade connector, reconnected to earth crown and everything worked ok.
Ps... Pin 31 on the hazard relay has a brown earth wire coming from it and goes to the earth crown behind fuse box. Might be worth checking this cable and its connectors, including the one in the relay holder.

um, i've already re-spaded the one from the relay, it goes to a spade that has another wire going to it?
&, i'm pretty sure, that when i removed it from the crown to check it i still got a bit of a buzz from the relay..
guess i should check that i haven't managed to snip the wire or something when i crimped the spade..
are the browns coming from the switch an earth too? i've re-spaded them aswell,
trying to get to grips with a wiring diagram (from the water-cooled petrol haynes
) & it says
something about an earth in the instrument panel wiring loom? is that anything to do with anything?
thanksyou

does anyone want to come & do this for me
i think i'm beat
just re-re-spaded the earth from the relay to be sure,
(couldn't get the spade under the relay out & my fingers hurt from trying
i shall go at it tommorow with some pliers, in the daylight, & sober! )

Runner,
Have you got a multimeter you can use (or a lead and 12 volt lamp bulb)?
Working from the Haynes diagram that you have (which is virtually identical to the diagram in the download section of 'Club Stuff' top of page for the '82 diesel). Check that with ignition off and the indicator stalk in the central position that you have 12 volts on Both sides of fuse 9 (fuse shown as 4 in your Haynes diagram) in other words is the fuse making a good connection in its holder. Then check 12 volts are getting to connection 30 on the back of the hazard light switch (with the switch in the off position) wire is red/white from fuse to connection 30.
If this checks out then the route the current takes is, (with the hazard switch on) from connection 30 on the switch internally to connection 49 on the switch, then via a white wire to 49 on the relay, then out of the relay (on 49a) to 49a on the back of the hazard switch via a black/white/green wire. Then internally to R and L on the hazard switch and through all four indicator bulbs to earth.
Bit of a long winded tale, but hopefully you can follow the intended route of the current on the Haynes diagram and by checking the voltage at each point in sequence, maybe find some fault in the circuit.
Let us know how you get on.
Mike

thankyou
, i have followed the first part of your plan & i have got current,
& i'm re-re-re-reading the next part of your plan,.. & thinking of going back to bed (tis my birthday after all)
thing is, something i've done in checking for current has got them working now,
i hate that, i've done something but i don't know what!
hopefuly they'll still be working come monday so i can get on with sorting this horn going
off randomly when steering

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Glad your hazards are working. May have just been a poor connection between the fuse and holder or connector at the back of the switch itself.
Not had any doings with the horn wiring, but basically there is normally a live feed to to horn unit itself, and the other side of the horn goes to earth via the push on the steering wheel. Any short in the wiring to the horn push up along the steering column will make it sound. There is a sorta slip ring gizmo in there somewhere that gives trouble shedding bits of brass, I seem to recall seeing threads on the subject.
