Accelerator awkward to operate?

I've not had my van long, as you can probably tell by the number of questions I keep asking. I noticed the problem when I picked it up, but being new to old VW's I assumed having the accelerator hinged on the floor was the issue and I just needed to get use to it.
The problem is the pedal doesn't seem to be very smooth, it's fine pulling away, but I find when I'm up to speed and just need to touch the pedal for a bit more gas there is a bit of resistance and I end up giving it to much and jolt forwards. The other thing is I can pull up at a junction and the revs are still at the same rpm I was just cruising at, give the accelerator a blip and they drop back down again.
It had a new cable fitted before I picked it up. Does the cable run through a tube? If so would it be a fair assumption that it probably needs greasing? Or are these pedals just very sensitive……? I find myself slipping the clutch a lot at the moment to encourage smooth driving I'm sure that's not good!

Not sure if you had the same problem i did, but my cable was catching against the metal shroud near the engine causing the revs to stay high at a junction. It was just a case of the shroud being slightly bent stopping the cable returning to idle position.
My clutch was also slipping at junctions. This was the Flywheel oilseal leaking, once you got moving the clutch had spun off most of the oil so it went away.

!
Theres a little pump on the side of the carb with a diaphragm in it. It is connected to the throttle mechanism.
if the tube running from it gets blocked there will be resistance at the pedal.
the action of this pump can be seen from the top of the carb.
once the 'pancake' has been removed there is a little tube pointing down the venturi.
when the pedal is pressed there should be a jolly good squirt of fuel.
As for the revs , there are three stages of fast idle for when the engine is cold.
as the engine warms up the throttle stop 'steps down ' to the next one.
Eventualy stopping at the bottom with the engine warmed up.
This works with the automatic choke using vacuum, springs and a bi-metal strip.
removal of the carb and these parts will reveal any issues with the bi metal spring unit and choke pull down vacuum unit.
Or it's the cable
hope this helps

tHROTTLE CABLES RUN THROUGH A
Ah, "Balls", I hate caps lock me..
Anyway, cable runs through a conduit, they do break and do funny things.
Also, the hinge where the pedal meets the floor is a favorite place for bodging.

Thanks for th responce. Should have said I have the 2.1 fuel injected engine. I'll check out the conduit and the hinge in the next day or two.

I find the throttle response too much at the lower end. On my CF I had a snail shaped pulley on the carburator which gave a large foot movement with respect to throttle opening at the low end then becoming more fierce as you opened it up. On my 2.1 BWX I have difficulty in applying a gentle acceleration in first and often pull way in second to quieten things down. Does anyone else find initial throttle opening to agressive?

did marladys this week.....hard to press n revs stayin up at junctions(diesel by the way).......turned out to be a combo of faults.....no lube atall on the cable.....seized in the armoured section of the casing....and the plastic part of the casing was split where it was jambed between the front to rear coolant hoses and the chassis thus crushin eet ......godda be one of the cheapest and easiest jobs ive ever done on the bus......£12 all in......fantastic

Hello,
I'm not sure if my problem is the same as those mentioned above but the accelerator pedal is very hard to depress, and then when I do manage to lever it I end up giving it too much welly and zoom forward far too fast.
Also, the 1st time I use the van each day I need to let the engine run for a minute or so before applying the throttle or it stalls.
Does anything here ring a bell. Any advice would be great?
Thanks,
Cat
