Advice needed
Having taken my rear side window out to replace the seal, the dreaded rust has damaged the bottom corners quite badly. Can I use filler such as chemical metal or is this a weld job, which is beyond my abilities.

Also my side windows are curved, does that mean it is a conversion and not an original.

Is it a panel van with windows cut in, or has it factory windows? It will really need welding in either case but it is easier (cheeper) if a converted panel van.

Yes, weld, plastic metal or filler no chance unless you can fabricate hybrid composite structures like McLaren, Lotus etc

If it is a panel van the window rubbers will have a triangle insert in them which locks the glass in the seal. The window will also sit proud on the side of the van. if it is factory the window will sit slightly inboard of the side. Also check your chassis number this will tell you wether it is a caravelle, panel van, Kombi etc...

ok......got the chassis number, but you are dealing with a complete numpty here! How do I tell what the van is from the chassis no?

hi mate ive got the same problem, when people say we need to weld what do they mean a whole pannel or just a spot weld.

I have recently repaired a couple of mine.I repaired pinholes with spot weld and bad bits with a couple of patches after using a spot blaster to eradicate all the rot first.
I followed up with a copious helping of wax oil sprayed inside the window housing.So far all is well...

Did you use any filler to tidy up the lines after the welding Mr Wolf ?

After that grey galvanising spray I used just a thin skim before prepping for paint.

Hi can you buy new panels and cut a new hole out or are they very expensive.

I have not been able to locate any panels for the top half of the bus. You could ask some of the breakers on here and they would be able to cut out panels fron a van.

Great tuturial, looks so easy, got to give it a go but never touched a welder in my life but what the hell
