Pushrod oil seals leaking?

Hi there,
Im new to this forum and hi to one and all. Ive just bought a tatty T25 and im looking to sort the outstanding issues out, first on my list is the oil leak from the engine. I have search the engine for topics regarding push rod tube leaks, but as of yet I havent really seen a definitive answer. My questions are:-
1) What are the best tubes to go with or tube seals?
2) Who are the cheapest supplier, I think the cheapest are just kampers but could be wrong.
3) Are the standard seals on just kampers any good?
4) I have also seen seals on justaircooled.com and they are the white ones are they better and can i use these for top and bottom of the push rods?
5) Do I need to take the engine out or can I do them in situ?
6) If in situ do I really need new tubes that are spring based? Or can I use the existing standard ones with decent seals.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks and regards,
gonche

On the aircolled I think you just remove rocker shafts and you can swap tubes and seals really easy with engine in.

Make sure you rub a bit of gasket seal round the rubbers too

Make sure you get all the old gasket goo residue off or the new rings wont seal.

Hey thanks for your responses.
Ive read previous posts where it mentioned not to use gasket seal, do you think this is best, and not to try with just fresh oil or grease around the seals?
I ordered the seals from
http://www.vwheritage.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; in the end. I will try to have a go at them at the weekend and will see if I will need sealant then.
Thanks again for the good advice.

pay close attention to the locking wire and its position. its a bugger to put back if you've forgot where it went!!!

My 2ltr Aircooled has been leaking oil for some time now, replaced the rocker cover gaskets as the easy option, but no luck, so suspect like you the push rod seals.
Following a 2 hour motorway run I topped up oil, (maybe a bit to much) and now my leak is massive!! I get oil smoke wafting around the engine as it drips on the heat exchangers.
The van also won't idle propperly now, but if I pull the vacuum pipe from the air intake unit I hear a release of pressure and it runs OK..???? On switching off I can see oil smoke emitting from the air intake pipe!!
I would be interested to know how you get on changing your seals, as my priority is to stop mine leaking. They look a bit of a pig to access. And i've read different things with regards to reseting the tappets.

Hi there,
Yeah my plan is to have a go at them on saturday, if I can I will take some pictures and post them, but it all depends on what the weather is like at the weekend.
As for tappets I was under the impression that they are hydralic lifters and I an only disturbing the rocker arm and spring... I will see when I take the cover of... thanks also for the advice on observing the rocker spring and I will make sure I am taking note of where everything is when im taking the cover of, maybe if my hands arent to oily I will take pictures all the way through, will see if the seals turn up and and if the weather is good...
Cheers,

remove the rocker cover then remove the rocker assembly and spring twist the pushrodtube while pushing it towards the cylinder head do one at a time if changing all so you dont get the tubes mixed up

as for the reset of tappets i never have after doing the seals and no probs, its not like the motor has turned over or anything has moved is it!!!
just bolt the bugger back together.

These are all good points and thanks for your time, I am hoping the seals have turned up at home. As for using Telescopic tubes I am using the old ones, will clean and put back in and will do one at a time as advised. If they leak again, I will have to spend some more money on some telescopic tubes, which ones are best, anyone have a link they could provide?
Cheers,

dont use just campers push rod tube seals , they are "pooh" and leek after a few hundred miles , use german quality seals.
when tightening up rockers dont nip up then 2 further turns like haynes manual say,s 1 turn is ample.
be sure to correctly replace the wire retainer in the slots on the rocker assembly

Not the same size both ends. The rocker end is bigger.

Would you say it is better to take the exhaust of or just tin wear, still havent had the time or weather to work on the Van, but in the mean time I thought it was best collect as much info as possible. Also I have seen pushrod tubes on justaircooled for £5.49 and just kampers for £16, should I get either of these, or should I save some cash and buy the (CSP) telescopic ones from machine7.com ?
Thanks in advance,
