hi has any one done a rear coil spring mounting ,(lower part)? is thier a kit or can any one give me any ideas as to what to do please. Just took my van for m o t and its fail on above gutted, ta mrs treacle

Sorry but there is No quick fix for this problem other than a replacement trailing arm..

MOT regs doesn't allow you to weld up any suspension items other than chassis mountings...

I have them made, only a few left and they don't break the bank.

I eat my words yet again,,,,,,,,There is quick fix for this problem but the MOT man may not be T25 sympathetic.

Worth a try all the same......

in the haynes manual it says thier is a lower packing ring for the coil spring does any one no if you can sill get them if so where form and thanks a lot for the help

I have done this repair to both my rear arms.
Simons didn't sell the plates then so I had mine made, for the hassle invovlved I would have bought the plates if available at that price.
My spacers were fubar so I went to VW. Ones for T3 are no longer available, I used to have a tame parts man who found that ones from T4 (may be rear spring top mount) were about the same. From memory cost about £15 each and they do the job perfect.
As for the welding, it will fail MOT if it appears to be a deliberate modifiaction which has weekened the component, many suspension componets are welded in production anyway. So do the job properly, clean them up, have them properly welded by some one competant, then neatly underseal the whole arm. Then described them as proffessionally reconditioned units! If worried speek to your MOT garage and tell them what you are doing. The MOT is a safety test so a properly repaired arm should be viewed as a better prospect than a crumbling load of rust!

One side on mine had sheared off it was that bad. This had caused the spring to break. Got a replacement from brickwerks & my mate welded it on.
The hardest bit was getting the old one off & cleaning up the area for welding and that wasnt that hard, even for me. I re-used the original packing piece as it was fien after a clean up.

just to update receved 2 lower spring mounts from brickwerks got the old ones off (held on by 5 spot welds) cleaned the trailling arms up my son did the welding approx 15mins to do two .job now done they look as good as new . thanks to this forum for all your help all so put a new clutch in by my self last ( took me about 4/5 hrs) week never done anything like this before ,after reading postings and answers and the wiki i though i'll give it a go and i enjoyed doing it just needs seatbelt now then off for retest so thanks 80-90 for all your help cheers kev

This is EXACTLY whats Im looking at doing, both my mounting points on my trailing arms are knackered - one on the guides has rusted and snapped off the other is liffting off the trailing arm really badly. (see my other post https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=56129).

Ive got all the parts from Brickwerks to start the repair job this weekend (was cheaper than new trailing arms @ £400 each from VW!!!) my future father in law will be doing the welding.

Anywayz, I was thinking about coating the entire trailing arm in either underseal or hammerrite / rustoleum type paint, to make the repair neat and to future proof it all a little from the elements - would this be sensible or is this a bad move - and what should I coat it with???
